Diabetes - What is it? 

Diabetes is a condition of the body in which sugar is not used correctly to provide energy for living and growing.  You develop diabetes when your body doesn't produce enough insulin.  Without insulin your body can’t get the energy it needs from your food.

 

 Type 1 - is commonly called juvenile diabetes

 Type 2 - is commonly called adult onset diabetes

How is it treated?

Depending on the type and severity of the diabetes, either,

          • o             with diet and  exercise or
    • o             diet, exercise and medication

Thistlewood have developed products which are suitable for persons with Diabetes.  This range currently includes Jams - 45 % fruit sweetened with sorbitol. (Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that the body metabolises slowly)  Low GI Muesli with added cranberries, Handmade Low GI Biscuits with REAL fruit bits, Low GI fruit toppings and  jams.
